Brazil and USA sign military development agreement


Brazil and the United States signed yesterday (8), in the American state of Florida, an agreement in the military area for the development of future projects.

The Research, Development, Test and Evaluation Agreement will pave the way for improving or providing new military capabilities.

The Brazilian government hopes to facilitate its access to the North American defense market, as well as to facilitate the entry of Brazilian products in 28 other countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The signing of the agreement occurred during the visit of President Jair Bolsonaro to the Southern Military Command, responsible for coordinating the United States military operations in the Caribbean, Central and South America. The forecast is that Bolsonaro will remain in the United States until tomorrow (10 ).

In a joint statement, Planalto and the White House stated that the presidents reaffirmed their mutual support for “democracy in the region”, including support for Venezula's interim president, Juan Guaidó.

Both also reinforced the commitment to peace and prosperity in the Middle East. Trump said he will continue to support Brazil in the process of accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Joint Statement by President Jair Bolsonaro and President Donald J. Trump

Today, President Jair Bolsonaro and President Donald J. Trump reaffirmed the strategic alliance between Brazil and the United States, deepening the partnership between the two countries. The two leaders focused on increasing economic prosperity, strengthening democracy and promoting peace and security.

President Bolsonaro and President Trump reiterated their countries' support for democracy in the region, including support for Venezuela's interim president, Juan Guaidó, and the democratically elected Venezuelan National Assembly in their work to restore constitutional order in Venezuela. The two leaders also discussed supporting Bolivia's efforts to hold free and fair elections.

President Bolsonaro and President Trump reiterated their commitment to peace and prosperity in the Middle East, and President Bolsonaro praised the U.S. vision for peaceful coexistence between the State of Israel and a Palestinian state.

As leaders of the two largest economies in the hemisphere, President Bolsonaro and President Trump highlighted the potential benefits of expanding bilateral economic relations for Brazilian and American workers and companies. To that end, they instructed their trade representatives to deepen discussions for a bilateral trade package this year, with a view to intensifying the economic partnership between the two countries.

The two leaders also discussed accelerating Brazil's participation in the Authorized Economic Operators program, which would streamline trade between the two countries by ensuring the safety of imported goods, with the goal of Brazil entering the program in 2021.

President Trump reiterated the United States' support for the initiation of Brazil's accession process to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and urges its OECD partners to work together with the United States to achieve this goal, which it will help the growth of the Brazilian economy and increase its competitiveness.

The two leaders noted that their teams are finalizing other areas of bilateral cooperation, including collaboration on military research and development and the signing of a memorandum of understanding under the America Cresce program, to stimulate economic development in the hemisphere. They also highlighted other areas of ongoing cooperation, such as the aerospace, science and technology, health and innovation sectors.

The presidents also discussed the One Trillion Tree Initiative, an effort that aims to replant, avoid degrading and better protect one trillion trees worldwide by 2050, through collective actions from all sectors of society. The two leaders also welcomed the signing of the Brazil-United States Work Plan for Science and Technology 2020-2023 as a fundamental instrument for joint research and promotion of new technologies.
