Pentagon predicts vaccine against covid-19 by the end of the year
The director of the United States Armed Forces Infectious Disease Research Program, Colonel Wendy Sammons-Jackson, said today (3/6) that it is reasonable to expect that some type of vaccine for the new coronavirus will be available for part of the American population by the end of this year (2020).
Defense Secretary Mark Esper promised on May 15 that the US Armed Forces and other areas of government would, in collaboration with the private sector, produce a vaccine on a scale to treat the country's population and its partners. around the world by the end of the year.
Another Army researcher, Kayvon Modjarrad, said that researchers are learning about the new coronavirus faster than about any other virus previously.
“So getting a vaccine in a matter of months, from concept to phase 3 of clinical trials and with potential for licensing, is unprecedented. But in this case, I very much believe that it is possible, ”said Modjarrad.
Researchers said the work involves companies like AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Sanofi to develop antibiotic drugs and vaccines. The military plans to test its own vaccine on people in late summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
